The Idea of Prom

Promenade, which was later shortened to prom (probably by some hip high schoolers), started out as co-ed college banquets in the late 1800s in the northeastern United States. The first or at least the most cited as the first written record of it was made in 1894 by Amherst student Dwight Morrow discussing his invite to Smith College’s prom in his journal. From there, the tradition of a formal, co-ed get-together for graduating seniors trickled down from higher education to high school, where it really became a middle-class response to the upper-crust tradition of debutante balls . The formal dinner and dance was seen as a prime way to teach middle-class teenagers proper social skills, as evidenced by a 1935 article in Parents magazine describing prom as a warm-up for teens to the real world “gracious manners and good taste.

Why have a prom?

Asides from the partying and fun, another aspect of prom is to help students learn important social skills that are fundamental in life’s success.

Last moments together

Giving the graduating students the momentary chance to celebrate their achievements in secondary school together with their peers from other schools before post-graduation plans takes them to different directions

A pat on the back

Having gone through and completed their secondary school education, an event to let loose and celebrate in a controlled environment is well deserved. What better way to end a phase than party with close friends.

Lack of events for teens

There are several events for kids and adults but rarely anything for teenagers. Afro Prom will cater to the 15-17 age range by putting together events where they can all come together and have tons of fun.
